Colleen Browning: The enchantment of realism

New publication details the life and art of a pivotal American realist painter. Major retrospective of her work opens on May 24th at the National Academy of Design in New York. Dr. Philip Eliasoph, professor of Visual and Performing Arts: The book, sponsored by the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art (SAMA) is the first extensive study and definitive work about Browning and details her distinctive brand of figurative painting. From depicting worshipers in a Guatemalan church to graffiti-covered Harlem subways, the artist was a major force in the American realist movement largely dominated by men. Fairfield will host a dual-platform exhibition of Browning’s work from January 24 through March 24 on campus at the Bellarmine Museum of Art and the Thomas J. Walsh Art Gallery. The Bellarmine will exhibit some of Browning’s early work, including works on paper and signature oil paintings, while the Walsh will open ‘Colleen Browning: A Brush with Magic.’
